Walker Lukens Set To Release New EP On Modern Outsider Records

August 22, 2016

Austin, TX’s Walker Lukens will release his new EP Never Understood – produced by Jim Eno of Spoon – on October 14, 2016 via Modern Outsider. The official video for EP track “Lifted” premiered today via All Things Go, which called it a “high-concept new video…[that] employs [a] thousand Internet references a minute.” Of the video, Lukens says, “I wanted to make a video that felt like flipping through a bunch of tabs on your Internet browser. I wanted to make a video that felt like the Internet went through a food processor. Brad Montesi and I compiled a bunch of our favorite memes, GIFS, motifs and gags and basically tried to recreate them with my bandmates and me.”

Produced by Eno in his Public Hi-Fi studio in Austin, the four songs on the Never Understood EP showcase Lukens’ distinctive and diverse talents as a songwriter and singer. The EP was written throughout last year – with influences ranging from “The Savage Detectives” to a Nick Cave ACL taping to Tecate – and arranged and recorded with his longtime backing band, The Side Arms. From the looped, bluesy squall of “Jacket On Ya Shoulders” and the “curious, textured” (NPR’s All Songs Considered) “Lifted,” to the urgent, sultry groove of “The Touch” and understated, soulful “Never Understood,” the EP is a striking and peerless listen.

Lukens and The Side Arms will be touring extensively this fall, beginning with a run of Texas shows in September and October that includes a performance at the second weekend of the Austin City Limits festival. See the tour dates here
